Men’s Health Week is formally recognised on June 9–15, 2025, and therefore it is the perfect time to focus on one of the most powerful tools for better health: regular exercise.
At Geelong Rehabilitation Centre, we’re committed to helping men across our
community move better, feel stronger, and live healthier lives.
Why Men’s Health Needs Attention
Australian men face some serious health challenges:
Higher rates of heart disease, diabetes, and cancer
One in eight experience depression
One in five deal with anxiety disorders
These statistics aren’t just numbers—they're a call to action (Exercise Right, 2021).
What Exercise Can Do for Men
Exercise isn’t just about fitness. It’s medicine for both the body and the mind.
Physical Benefits
Reduces heart disease risk and improves cardiovascular function (Healthworks,
2020)
Builds muscle and lowers cancer risk through strength training (Healthworks, 2020)
Mental & Cognitive Benefits
Alleviates depression and anxiety symptoms naturally (Exercise Right, 2023)
Improves memory, focus, and reduces risk of dementia (University of South
Australia, 2025)
How Much Is Enough?
According to the Australian Department of Health (2021), adults should aim for:
At least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity weekly
Strength training on 2+ days per week
Examples: brisk walking, cycling, swimming, resistance training.
Overcoming the Barriers
We know exercise can feel overwhelming—but small steps make a big difference:
Start small with achievable goals
Choose activities you enjoy
Team up with friends or professionals for support and accountability
