October 1 marks the International Day of Older Persons — a moment to honour the wisdom, resilience, and contributions of older adults in our communities. One of the most powerful ways to support healthy ageing is through exercise, which delivers benefits far beyond strength — including balance, mood, and independence.

Why Exercise Matters as We Age

Regular physical activity helps:

  • Maintain or improve balance, reducing the risk of falls

  • Preserve muscle strength, bone density, and joint health

  • Promote cardiovascular and metabolic health

  • Support mental well‑being, cognition, and mood

  • Sustain independence in daily tasks

Even small amounts of movement can make a big difference over time. Whether it’s walking, strength training, or water-based exercise, staying active can greatly improve quality of life in older age.

How Exercise Physiologists Can Help

An Accredited Exercise Physiologist (AEP) is qualified to develop safe, effective, and personalised exercise plans for older adults — especially those managing chronic conditions or recovering from illness or injury.

At Geelong Rehabilitation Centre, our AEPs offer both one-on-one sessions and group classes at various levels, making exercise both fun and effective. Whether you're just starting out or looking to stay active among peers, we offer flexible, supportive options for every ability.

Accessing Funding for Exercise

Through My Aged Care, eligible older Australians can access government-funded exercise physiology services. This support helps remove barriers to staying active and allows more people to access expert care as part of their ageing journey.

This International Day of Older Persons, let’s celebrate ageing with movement, strength, and confidence. If you or a loved one would benefit from a personalised exercise plan, contact Geelong Rehabilitation Centre today — and don’t forget to explore My Aged Care options to help get started.
